Should drugs be legal?

I believe drugs should be legal partially. Based on evidence and action, it's clear how these opposed beliefs alter the drug war. Drug usage is not always based on limiting supply and can create a demand, leading to more supply sold. Legalizing drugs(hard drugs just to be clear), can actually help reduce issues within the drug trade. A great example of this phenomenon is the implementation of these laws in Portugal. After proceeding with the expansive drug use across the law, it ended up flipping the boat and actually created safer streets, fewer addicts, and more spacious prisons. They treated users as mentally ill individuals rather than evil. In the Philippines, they used quite an opposite strategy. The government set out a goal of eliminating drug dealers and user across the country. This lead to mass death, an increase of addicts and sales, and too many people in prison to even house. They ended up packing around 3500 people in a prison built for 800 maximum. My answer is, although drugs are terrible and affect people very negatively, limiting usage actually provokes the trade enough to increase issues related to it as opposed to legalizing and incorporating addicts back into society.

Legalization reasoning:

Due to certain drugs being illegal, the demand is increased. Creating supply to come forth with it. This makes a joint easier to buy than a beer for underaged individuals due to the lack of government policies behind it.
